3M Thinsulate(TM) is delivered in a compressed form, similar to how we ship it. Fresh off the roll, the SM600L typically measures between 3/4 and 1 inch in thickness. Over time, it will naturally expand, although this process can take several weeks. For ease of installation, it's advisable to fit the material while it's still compressed and allow it to expand in place. The material's expansion is often aided by the vibrations from driving and exposure to heat, allowing it to 'fluff up'. The SM600L has a standard thickness of 42mm (1.65 inches) but can expand up to 2 inches, especially when hung from the ceiling, depending on the available space. Importantly, Thinsulate(TM) will only expand to fill the space it's given, without exerting pressure that could warp or bow trim panels.

1. How much 3M Thinsulate SM600L do I need for my camper van?

The amount depends on the vehicle model, wheelbase and number of windows. Use Tec Vanlife’s sizing chart to select the recommended quantity for your Sprinter, Ford Transit or Ram ProMaster. Vans without rear or sliding-door windows generally require approximately 10 additional linear feet.

2. What size is one linear foot of SM600L?

SM600L is 60 inches wide. One linear foot measures 12 × 60 inches and covers approximately five square feet.

3. Is 3M Thinsulate SM600L suitable for camper vans?

Yes. SM600L is a lightweight automotive acoustic insulation commonly used in camper-van walls, ceilings, doors, pillars and other cavities. It helps reduce interior noise while providing thermal insulation.

4. Which side of Thinsulate faces the van?

Install the white fibre side toward the metal van body. The black scrim should face the interior of the vehicle.

5. What adhesive should I use?

Use a suitable high-temperature contact adhesive such as Tensorgrip P307 or 3M Hi-Strength 90. Apply the adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the surface is clean and dry.

6. Does Thinsulate absorb water?

SM600L uses hydrophobic fibres that resist moisture, mould and mildew. It does not readily absorb water, making it well suited to vehicle environments. Proper ventilation and moisture management are still important in any camper conversion.

7. How thick is SM600L?

The nominal thickness is approximately 42 mm or 1.65 inches. It may arrive compressed and gradually recover its loft after unpacking and installation.

8. Do I need a vapour barrier with Thinsulate?

Many camper-van installations use SM600L without a traditional plastic vapour barrier because its fibres resist moisture. However, the complete wall design, climate, ventilation and treatment of exposed metal should all be considered.

9. Can SM600L be used on the floor?

SM600L is best suited to walls, ceilings, doors and cavities. A rigid, compression-resistant insulation is generally more appropriate beneath a camper-van floor. we usually install stripes of Duckliner inbetween the grooves and roll and full ontop top create a floating floor.

10. Does Thinsulate also reduce road noise?

Yes. SM600L is designed as an automotive acoustic absorber and helps reduce airborne sound inside the vehicle. For a more complete sound and thermal system, it can be paired with Tec Vanlife Duck Liner.

11. Is SM600L safe for automotive use?

SM600L is designed for automotive acoustic applications and is listed as meeting FMVSS 302 flammability requirements. Always follow appropriate vehicle-installation practices.
